Ever thought about coming to one of these workshops, and then chickened out because you didn’t think you were qualified? This is the workshop for you. We’re going to start at the beginning and learn the basics. Rhymes, Rhythm, Melody, and Structure. There is no requirement to write a song, only to work on something. And it’s half-price too!

FRIDAY:

Morning

  • Simple Structures. The basic architecture of a song. The reasons for form and how to find it.
  • Rhyme and Rhythm. How to decide on a rhyme pattern, and why we want to stick with it. How to discover the best rhythms to carry your words.
  • Song Bench. We’ll take a couple of our favorite songs apart and see how they work, and why they work so well.

Noon

  • Lunch

Afternoon

  • Writing time. We will supply you with a puzzle or a task or a mission, if you need somewhere to start. Otherwise, this is a time to just immerse yourself in your wild imagination. Whether you choose to be a part of a group, or a co-writer or two, Kevin will be making the rounds for one-on-one time or small group discussions.
  • Recap of the day, Group discussion.

SATURDAY:

Morning

  • Remember the listener. Songwriting is writing to be heard, not read. That changes everything.
  • Melody. The melody of the spoken word is the key. It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it.
  • Song Bench. We’ll look at great examples of the stuff we covered this morning.

Noon

  • Lunch

Afternoon

  • Writing time. We’ll break off into groups and the teachers will roam from one to the next, to help get you un-stuck, to help identify trouble spots, and to cheer you on. Those who aren’t working on something of their own are invited to listen in.
  • Recap of the day.  Here we can go over the ideas we’ve been talking about, share what we’ve figured out, maybe listen to some of the new songs. We’ll finish with a half hour of Q&A.

This event has been postponed from November, 2016. All existing registrations for this workshop will be honored, and we look forward to seeing you all!
